"In a world full of changing trends, I just want a little bit of tradition."
Do you have any traditions in your family? We have had quite a few but one of my favorite traditions is to get a live Christmas tree. As I am traveling around the world I collect an ornament at each place I visit.
When it’s time to decorate the tree, I have the best time looking at all of the places I’ve visited over the years. Check out 15+ Great Ideas for Christmas Traditions if you’d like some fun suggestions for traditions you can start with your family.
"Only buy something that you’d be perfectly happy to hold if the market shuts down for 10 years." ~ Warren Buffett
"Sometimes when you're in a dark place you think you've been buried, but you've actually been planted." ~ Christine Caine
Plants are such a great illustrations to dispel the myth, “I will always be a product of my circumstances”. The good news is as we grow WE can change our exposure to certain circumstances and start to move outside of our comfort zone for a different outcome. If you want a different result in your life then it’s time to make a change.
I took this picture at a really cute plant store in Atlanta, Georgia. There are SO many fun things to do in Atlanta. You should definitely add it to your list of places to visit!
"I hated every minute of training, but I said, ‘Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion." ~ Muhammad Ali
"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did." ~ Mark Twain
This is a picture from the first time I ever watched the sunrise. I was vacationing in Virginia Beach and got up early for the experience. Since then, I’ve been trying to find more places to watch the sunrise.
The good news is it’s free and you can do it any day of the week. Why are we not spending more days letting go of the life that rushes us around to appreciate some of the incredible yet simple experiences that life has to offer?
"Nothing is impossible. The word itself says, I'm possible!" ~ Audrey Hepburn
"Enjoy the little things in life because one day you'll look back and realize they were the big things." ~ Kurt Vonnegut
The best part of Moorefield West Virginia definitely involves seeing the views of the mountains. I paired this quote about enjoying the little things with the picture from my trip to visit my dad in WV. He just turned 80 and I am acutely aware that every single moment with my dad is priceless.
"To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people just exist." ~ Oscar Wilde
"The hardest thing in life is to know which bridge to cross and which to burn." ~ David Russell
The Walnut Street Bridge is a pedestrian bridge in Chattanooga Tennessee. I got to see it when I was visiting the main tourist attractions in Lookout Mountain, which are only a short drive away.
Sometimes it is hard to know if you are on the right track when it comes to bridges… building them, crossing them, or burning them. The best way to know is if you have peace in your heart that you’re doing the right thing. You are the only person who knows if you’re truly at peace.
"Great things are done by a series of small things brought together." ~ Vincent Van Gogh
"For where your treasure is there your heart will be also." ~ Matthew 31:6
This was a simple collection of shells we found when we were in Belize. I paired it with this verse because the act of searching for shells as a child reminds me of searching for “treasure”.
You search all along the shoreline determined to find something uniquely beautiful. It’s your only focus at the time. The truth is our greatest glory lies in what’s in our hearts, not what’s in our hands. As we mature, hopefully we learn that’s the real treasure.
"It’s never too late to be what you might’ve been." ~ George Eliot
"Don't be afraid to sit in the front row of your life."
I have a “thing” for cool chairs. I saw this chair when I was spending an epic weekend in Baltimore, Maryland.
Successful people know that hard work is what cultivates their own dreams. You decide to either be on the sidelines where you sit on the side of fear or be on the front line as an active participant in your own life.
"You were born to win, but to be a winner, you must plan to win, prepare to win, and expect to win." ~ Zig Ziglar
"Today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday." ~ Dale Carnegie
While bike riding in Pennsylvania, I stopped to take this picture. I thought I was taking a picture of the water, but after I got home and looked at it I saw what looks like an angel in the clouds. It became one of my favorite pictures.
I paired it with this quote about worry because it just goes to show that sometimes we get distracted by what is around us and we forget about how far we have come and who is watching over us.
"Don’t say you don’t have enough time. You have exactly the same number of hours per day that were given to Helen Keller, Pasteur, Michelangelo, Mother Teresa, Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Jefferson, and Albert Einstein." ~ H. Jackson Brown Jr.
"Autumn shows us how beautiful it is to let things go."
I lived in the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania for most of my life. Autumn is INCREDIBLE there. The best place to experience fall in the Poconos is the beautifully quaint town of Jim Thorpe.
Autumn reminds us that even if we have to let things go we can still have a happy life because it’s not “over”, it’s just “in-between”. Sometimes letting go feels like the most difficult thing but you are making space for something new and healthy to grow.
"You don’t need to see the whole staircase, just take the first step." ~ Martin Luther King Jr.
"There's only one person I think I'm better than and that's the old me."
My life has changed so much in the last decade. It’s hard for me to share my personal life on social media and risk judgment. People don’t really know you online. People who used to know you think they still know you. Somehow everyone else is an expert on you, and all the while you’ve spent years trying to learn who you are.
I have loved living in Georgia this past year. In southern Georgia, there is a small town called Thomasville with a 337-year-old MASSIVE oak tree. When I saw it, all I could think about was how much it must have “seen” in its lifetime.
"I never lose. Either I win or learn." ~ Nelson Mandela
"I was never going to go if I waited for someone to come with me."
Sometimes you really want to travel but you don’t have anyone to go with you. Don’t wait for someone or you might never go!
I think the best way to start out with solo travel is by joining travel group activities. There are tons of organized travel groups that you can join. It’s the most common way to travel when you don’t have a travel partner. That way you aren’t technically going alone.
I went on a mission trip to Guatemala and El Salvador with a group of people and it was a great way to volunteer and see a new place place while making new friends!
"If you think you’re too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito." ~ Dalai Lama
"If you were able to believe in Santa for like 8 years, you can believe in yourself for like 5 minutes."
Sometimes it’s easier to believe in other people or things than it is to believe in yourself. That’s why I love motivational quotes so much. When you are going through hard times and you just need some encouragement, don’t discount the power that motivational quotes have to help push you through.
“I never dreamed about success. I worked for it.” ~ Estée Lauder
"Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it."
Part of getting inspired by motivational quotes is paying it forward to help and lift others up. These pictures were taken at the What Lifts You mural in Nashville. It’s a VERY popular mural and people wait in long lines just to get a picture. We took our family Christmas trip to Nashville, TN there and I DEFINITELY recommend it! We took pictures at the mural on New Year’s Day when there was no line.
